Jenison teen dies after bicycle hit by car

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A teen from Jenison died Monday, the day after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

Jenison Public Schools officials confirmed the boy killed was Xzavier Gust, 14.

The crash happened around 10:40 p.m. Sunday on 44th Street east of 8th Avenue in Georgetown Township. Authorities say a Ford Fusion heading east on 44th Street hit Xzavier, who was riding his bicycle in the center of the road.

Xzavier was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was taken to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in critical condition. He died Monday afternoon, the district confirmed.

He would have started high school next week.

"It's been just a tough 20 hours here," Brett Cataldo, the principal of Jenison Junior High, where Xzavier was a student last year, said Monday night. "I know how we feel as a school, as a school family, and I know how close his family is, so it's a terrible time."
