We have not one but two new devices hot off the Apple Keynote this afternoon where we were introduced to the highly anticipated iOS7, the iPhone 5C, and the iPhone 5S. So what was the big deal? A number of things; first, is the iPhone 5C that comes in at $99 and in tons of colors. The iPhone 5C comes with a one year contract so that $99 will cost you much more. The specs of the phone, it comes with an 8 megapixel iSight camera with 3x zoom and the ability to do lowlight FaceTime and better HD capabilities and comes in 5 colors (green, red, white, blue, yellow) and will have a number of cases with holes in it to spotlight and accent the phone’s color. Apple called it “unapologetically plastic” and available for pre-order September 13 for either $99 for 16G or $199 for the 32G.
The iPhone 5S was introduced as the “gold standard” of smartphones which comes in gold, silver, and space grey (my dreams of Valyrian Steel i.e. Game of Thrones was dashed against the rocks). The highlights of the release are the 64-bit A-7 chip which is the first of its kind along with 120fps slo-motion video (no comments about the Galaxy please) and the iTouch ID. What is the iTouch ID? Well, 50% of iPhone owners do not password protect their devices so the iTouch ID is the fingerprint identification you didn’t know you wanted and the NSA thanks Apple for initiating. Apple as long wanted your “phone” experience to be unique to you so why not actually make the phone unique to you as your fingerprint does for your person. You will be able to purchase from iTunes with your fingerprint and a number of other experiences that should make your life with the phone more seamless and intuitive as is the Apple way. The pre-orders for the phones start on September 20th and will be $199, $299, and $399 respectively. What is interesting is that the iPhone 5 will not drop in price, it will instead – disappear and be replaced with these two devices, a brilliant stroke of sure fire phone envy if I ever saw one.
iOS7 is the announcement most were waiting on and it came first. The update will be available on September 18th and brings about big changes to the look and feel to the iOS experience with new fonts, a new feel, filters for the camera, and more gesture controls. iOS 7 is big deal for Apple and the Apple experience. That experience will start in the control center where the apps you use the most will live and for productivity iOS 7 will make iWork free on all devices which is a big shot across the bow of Microsoft and their holdout for Office on the iOS platform.
iOS7 will be available on all devices all the way back to the iPhone 4 as Apple looks to have this operating system on as many devices as possible to make iOS 7 “the most popular operating system in the world.” Maps have been improved to learn your commute and your routes as these technologies hope to better understand and become integral to our everyday lives. Maps can also sense the change in light to know when it is dark out and adjust the brightness of the screen. In other news Siri has had a sex change and now comes in both male and female flavors so if you prefer your AI host to be a man, now you may make that dream come true.
Sure there were not a ton of surprises left by the time we got to the announcements but between iOS7 and the two new phones that replace the iPhone 5, it was still a magically day for Apple as they attempt to get the spark of innovation back into the company.
