Kent County to establish domestic violence court

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Commissioners have set aside $4 million in American Rescue Plan funds to establish a domestic violence court in Kent County.

Prosecutor Chris Becker tells WOOD-TV that he believes the new court will do a better job at reforming offenders and reducing the number of domestic violence-related homicides.

"You're really trying to change their behavior and hold them accountable if they don't," Becker said. "It's really an intensive probation with maybe even jail time to hopefully get them out of that circle of violence that they're in."

The federal money will support the court for its first three years.
