GRPD K9 expected to live after getting stabbed eight times

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A Grand Rapids police dog is expected to live after getting stabbed eight times by a 24-year-old barricaded suspect yesterday.

Eli was rushed to an emergency vet with critical injuries.

"As soon as the handler realized that this individual was stabbing him, (the handler) called the dog back, the dog still ran back and even the handler told me the dog still wanted to be back in the fight," Chief Eric Winstrom told WOOD-TV.

The suspect was bitten by the dog and was arrested after the multiple-hour standoff on the northwest side of the city.
