GRPD officer found not guilty of careless discharge

A jury is deciding Grand Rapid Police Officer Gregory Bauer is not guilty of misdemeanor careless discharge of a firearm causing property damage less than $50.

The jury deliberated for one hour before announcing their decision.

The charge stemmed from an incident on December 9, 2021.

Officers were looking for a stolen car and believed they saw the car at a home.

Bauer ran at the driver, Davionne Smith, when he came out.

In the body camera video, you can hear Smith ask Bauer why he ran toward him and fired his gun.

Bauer says in the video that he tripped.
