Police offering tips on how to protect your vehicle from thefts

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - With the weather beginning to warm up, local authorities are warning people to take precautions to ensure their vehicles are safe from theft.

The Combined Auto Theft Team says that stolen vehicles are often abandoned after being used in other crimes.

The team is encouraging people to take the following steps to ensure their car is not taken:

  • Park in well-lit areas near buildings and/or cameras
  • Park in a garage if possible
  • Always remove valuables from your vehicle
  • Always lock your vehicle
  • Activate the alarm system on your vehicle
  • Use a locking mechanism on your vehicle (column collars, steering wheel locks or brake locks)
  • If you have home surveillance cameras, park in the camera view if possible
  • If you see something, say something – report all suspicious activity

Authorities are asking people who see any suspicious activity to call 911, or submit anonymous tipsthrough Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
