WMU letter outlines reason for coach's firing

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A former head coach for Western Michigan University was fired for inappropriate and insensitive comments he made to student-athletes, a letter from the university reveals.

Women’s Track and Field head coach Kelly Lycan wasfired Thursday. AWMU letter to Lycanoutlines the reasons for his ousting.

“Upon further review of this specific situation and the overall health of your program, I have determined that an unhealthy culture exists and that your continued presence with the team would create a volatile environment,” WMU Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard wrote.

The letter 24 Hour News 8 obtained through the Freedom of Information Act does not specify what Lycan said, but says he admitted to making the comments on Feb. 19.
