Wintry weather arrives in W. MI this week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Ready or not, here winter comes!

Cold air will spill down into West Michigan starting Thursday with very cold highs by early next week. Snowflakes also will be flying, especially near the lakeshore.

The transition begins Thursday night when a storm system will likely throw some sloppy snow on West Michigan. Accumulations are possible before the sloppy mix melts away. Rain or sleet could mix in to the snow, especially when the system arrives overnight Thursday.

Either way, start planning on a slick Friday morning commute with even colder air moving in for the weekend. Highs will bounce back above freezing Friday, but even colder air will move in next week.

Highs will struggle to top the low to mid-30s by the weekend.

Our jet stream will likely drop south, allowing cold Canadian air to continue to move into the Mitten, keeping highs locked in the low- to mid-30s and ramping up our chances for lake-effect snow.
