W. MI students get hands-on with ArtPrize Education Days

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Students in Grand Rapids are benefiting from their proximity to the world’s largest art competition.

Not only do they have easy access to see the more than 1,200 pieces of art, they also have a unique opportunity to get hands-on with the artists.

Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Coit Creative Arts Academy has been a part of ArtPrize Education Days for the last three years.

“It's not just seeing the art and walking around and seeing various art, it's actually getting to take part in the art with the artist,” said David Dublis, who the creative arts specialist at the school.

His students worked with Kelly Tuttle, who created Flutter — an ArtPrize Ten entry in the installation category displayed at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Butterflies in blossom-filled trees cover the 12 window panels with the light brightening their wings on sunny days.

As part of the Education Days workshop, Tuttle explained how she created the butterflies then helped them create their own.
