Work resumes on Portage road project

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Construction has resumed on a road project in Portage after a labor dispute brought work to a halt for nearly two weeks.

On Wednesday, the City of Portage announced work on South Westnedge Avenue from Romence Road to Mall Drive had resumed.

The project, which was supposed to be completed on Sept. 14, had come to a standstill because of a contract dispute between the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324.

The intersection of South Westnedge Avenue and Romence Road will be closed at 9 p.m. Thursday before final paving of Westnedge Avenue begins at 8 a.m. Friday. Paving is expected to be completed on Saturday.

The road is expected to be striped early in the week of Oct. 1 before it is fully opened to traffic.

Drivers are advised to find alternate routes while the project is being completed due to periodic closures of commercial drives and at the intersection at Romence Road.
