GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — ArtPrize 10 officially begins Wednesday, but art that’s bound to captivate your senses is already popping up in and around the Grand River in Grand Rapids.
Floating atop the Grand River is a 20-foot orb dubbed Harvest Dome 3.0. It’s built from brightly-colored seat belts and rearview mirrors constructed atop a ring of two-liter pop bottles.
The artists behind the installation say the piece speaks to the river’s impact on industry and environment.
Visitors walking the Gillett Bridge will encounter an illuminating installation, called Oscillation. Each piece is covered in film that reflects various colors and plays different pitches depending on where you stand.
Tampa, Florida artist Ryan Swanson says the idea is to encourage onlookers to interact with one another.
“What we’re trying to do is activate this kind of access point through the city and get people putting down their phone to physically engage with one another,” he said.
“It’s been really cool to see people kind of start to play and someone else walks up and starts to play. And then they start to conversate (sic) and engage with one another. So it’s really about creating that sense of community,” he added.
More than 1,200 entries will be on display during ArtPrize 10, which runs Sept. 19 through Oct. 7.
