Volunteers hit Michigan beaches for annual trash cleanup

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thousands of volunteers will be fanning out along Great Lakes beaches Saturday for an annual trash pickup.

An environmental group called the Alliance for the Great Lakes sponsors the Adopt-a-Beach program every September, as the summer tourist season winds down.

Event times vary by location. Visit their website to find cleanups in your community.

It's the largest annual day of action for the Great Lakes.

Teams target beaches and shorelines along all five of the Great Lakes.

It's part of a larger initiative called the International Coastal Cleanup, which draws millions of participants worldwide.
