Officer faces charge for running over suspect

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WOOD) — A former Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety officer is facing an assault charge after running over a man during a chase.

Steven Johnson, 51, of Sturgis, was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon after prosecutors say he purposefully hit the man with his squad car.

The incident happened when officers responded to a call of a man with a lawn mower around 1:45 a.m. on May 10. While investigating the possibility of the lawn mower being stolen, officers came upon 25-year-old Ronald Glover, Jr. of Benton Harbor on a bike without a headlight, which is a state law and city ordinance violation.
