Juan Carlos Buenida-Villalpando of GR Identified as Victim of Division Ave. Crash

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are searching for a driver who crashed into a utility pole, leaving his passenger to die.

It happened around 11:05 p.m. on Division Avenue at Alger Street, at the border of Grand Rapids and Wyoming.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says it appears the driver was traveling north on Division Avenue just south of Alger when his SUV hit the median and went airborne, hitting a utility pole on the west side of Division Avenue.

The 28-year-old passenger, identified as Juan Carlos Buenida-Villalpando of Grand Rapids, died at the scene.

The driver ran, police said. They’re looking for a white man in his 20s who is between 5 feet 8 inches tall and 5 feet 10 inches tall with short hair and a beard. He was last seen wearing a pink shirt and khaki shorts.

According to the Consumers Energy outage map, 28 homes and businesses were without power as of Thursday at 4 a.m. Power is expected to be restored by 7 a.m.
