Winter's Deep Freeze Causes Deeply Buried Damage

The deep freeze in Michigan went well underground and that, say UP emergency managers, is where the real damage occurred.

Marquette County's emergency manager told a legislative hearing in the state House yesterday that her county alone has $1.5 million in underground water-pipe damage.

She estimated the entire UP has more than $5 million in underground infrastructure damage.

Escanaba state Senator Tom Casperson said it was like "getting a hurricane, tornado and an earthquake", but since it's underground, you cannot see it.

We had reports at some point this past winter where the frozen ground extended to seven feet underground or more.
