State defends prison food contracts

The Michigan Department of Corrections defended its contract with food service provider Aramark despite growing protests.

A series of issues involving spoiled food at Michigan prisons were reported in July. Last week, Gov. Rick Snyder issued a $200,000 fine against Amarark Correctional Services in response, though the contract remains in place.

MDOC in a statement Thursday said the company wasn't responsible for inmate illnesses and reports of maggots in prison food.

"We determined none of these incidents were caused by Aramark," MDOC said. "Despite heavy scrutiny and challenges, Aramark has served more than 20 million meals through July with great efficiency."

Opponents said the fine imposed by the governor was ineffective when weighed against the $145 million value of its contract with the state.
