The Michigan Department of Human Services Wednesday morning implemented the soft launch of its new Michigan Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System.

Officials say the goal of the program is to offer an improved case management tool for child welfare in Michigan, especially for Children’s Protective Services, foster care and adoption cases.

The new system aims to make it easier to monitor all cases, track both the case progress and the services offered to clients and ensure better safety for children in care. The new system has been built in partnership with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, project vendor Unisys and project manager Dewpoint.

According to DHS, at the heart of the system is a "first" in Michigan: the ability for different entities to share child welfare case data in real-time, online.

Secure access can be gained through a desk top, lap top or a variety of mobile devices.

It's expected that eventually, more than 6,000 DHS and private agency caseworkers and state court employees will be using the system daily.
