The first comprehensive master plan for Flint in more than 50 years has been approved by city council.

Public reports say Flint's that city council voted unanimously on Monday night on the plan. The master plan will direct future growth and development and create a new zoning code, acting as a blueprint for long-term decision making.

The "Imagine Flint'' planning process was paid for with a nearly $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Officials say there have been more than 300 meetings with 5,000 residents during the planning phase.

Flint has been under state oversight since 2011. The city currently is dealing with $3 million in structural debt.
